EFF MPs Threaten to Host Parallel ‘SONA Watching Party’ After Parliament Snubs Them

Jestin Harleythorne

CAPE TOWN – In a dramatic turn of events, Parliament has donned its party planner hat and wants to ban Julius Malema and his EFF entourage from the 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA). It seems Parliament didn’t appreciate the EFF’s impromptu stage invasion during February’s SONA, where they threatened to turn the event into a presidential roast.

The disciplinary hearing, which the EFF decided to ditch like a bad dance partner, continued without them. Advocate Anton Katz, the hearing’s ringleader, proposed a punishment that’s more severe than a timeout – a 10-day suspension for the EFF MPs, including the day of SONA 2024. It’s like sending them to the political naughty corner.

Katz emphasized that SONA is a serious event and the MPs need a timeout to reflect on their stage-crashing shenanigans. He suggested, “So we submit that an appropriate sanction would be for those six affected members to miss out on SONA 2024.” It seems Parliament is taking inspiration from the school of tough love.

In an ironic twist, the EFF, despite storming out of the hearings faster than you can say “mic drop,” managed to submit a written request to make submissions. It’s like trying to RSVP to a party you’ve already been uninvited from.

As the political spectacle unfolds, the EFF MPs are reportedly considering hosting their own SONA viewing party, complete with popcorn and a commentary track that might rival the main event. Whether they’re barred or not, it seems the EFF is determined to make SONA 2024 an affair to remember – with or without Parliament’s permission. Grab your front-row seats; it’s going to be a showstopper!
