MPUMALANGA – In a plot twist that could rival the best vanishing bunny trick, the Middelburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has pulled a rabbit out of the legal hat by striking a whopping R2.8 billion fraud and corruption case off the roll. Former Eskom’s Chief Executive Officer Matshela Koko, along with 18 accomplices, must be feeling like they just escaped from a judicial magic show.
Magistrate Stanley Jacobs, in what some are calling the “Abracadabra Ruling,” cited undue delays in the case. It appears the court believes in making accusations disappear faster than you can say “presto-change-o.”
Koko, not one to miss a chance in the spotlight, labelled the National Prosecuting Authority’s actions as a “hate crime.” Speaking to the media, he stated, “Justice cuts both ways. You can’t make such allegations, investigate them for more than 5 years, bring me to court, wake me up at six in the morning, and more than 12 months later you’re not ready to go to trial. What we see here is a hate crime.” It seems Koko has a flair for the dramatic, turning the legal stage into a Shakespearean tragedy.
In the land where legal proceedings resemble a carnival of illusions, South Africans are left wondering if they’re the audience or unwitting participants in a legal comedy. As the curtain falls on this legal escapade, one can only hope that someone remembered to shout, “Ta-da!”
